GIS Intern

SPAWN is currently seeking a GIS intern to help with a variety of mapping projects focused on protecting and enhancing endangered runs of coho salmon and steelhead trout.

Areas of focus include the following:

  • Mapping Creek flow and Seasonal Drying Dynamics
  • Salmonid Distribution Throughout the Year
  • Water Quality Data and Sampling Sites
  • Development and Mapping of Restoration Projects
  • Creekside Parcel Analysis
  • Migration Barriers
  • Spawning Sites
  • Woody Debris Dynamics - Map and Track Movement
  • Stream Geo-reference Project

This is a great opportunity to engage in on the ground work while also applying GIS skills while significantly benefiting salmonids, countless other species and watershed health. An existing GIS system with ARCGIS is set up in our office.

Watershed Science Internship

SPAWN, the Salmon Protection And Watershed Network, located in west Marin County, CA is seeking an intern to fill a Watershed Science Position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in monitoring of salmonid populations and habitat conditions in the watershed
  • Assist in the development of educational materials
  • General office support
  • Maintaining and summarizing data
  • Assisting in the Juvenile Salmonid Relocation Program from drying streams
  • Participate in water quality monitoring
  • Assist in coordination and participation of restoration projects
  • Maintain a member database
  • Assisting in coordinating mailings, press releases, etc.
  • Participating in restoration projects
  • Coordination of meetings and forums

Helpful Qualifications:

  • Interest in environmental protection and endangered species - particularly coho salmon and steelhead trout and watershed ecology
  • Experience in biology/environmental studies
  • Background in environmental education
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to use Windows Office or Mac proficiently
  • Drivers license (own vehicle a plus)
  • Ability to project a positive image with community
  • Organization skills with attention to detail

3 month committment preferred.

About SPAWN:
SPAWN works to protect threatened salmonids, countless other species and their habitat in the Lagunitas Watershed, west Marin County CA. This watershed supports one of the largest populations of wild coho salmon left in California, and also maintains populations of threatened steelhead trout and endangered freshwater shrimp. SPAWN bases their community restoration, research, education, outreach and advocacy efforts on science-based conservation principles.
