Fairfax Sustainability Center, Marin County

Sustainable Fairfax (http://www.sustainablefairfax.org/) is one of the first groups in Marin to pioneer sustainability, with a legacy of educating the town council, supporting the community, providing services to the town, and conducting educational events since 1999.

At their Sustainability Center located at 141 Bolinas-Fairfax Road in Fairfax you can observe real, functioning roofwater catchment designs - rainchains, cisterns, ponds, swales and vernal pools.

For more info contact Pam Hartwell-Herrero (Executive Director) at Pam@SustainableFairfax.org

Rainfall from the front of the building cascades down rainchains into a planter-tub which spills over into a raingarden.

Rainfall from the back of the building is collected in a 1,000-gallon cistern which is designed to overflow into a pond and raingardens (vegetated swales)

A beautiful pond receives overflow from the 1,000-gallon cistern connected to the rooftop rainwater catchment

Vernal pools work to slow down erosive stormwater runoff allowing rainwater to percolate into the soils and replensish groundwater.
