WHY H20 CONSERVATION MATTERS

  • 50% of historical salmon habitat in Marin County has already been lost to dams and reservoirs. Back in 1982 and again in 1992 local environmental groups fought hard-won battles to ensure that adequate instream flows and spawning and rearing habitat for coho salmon and steelhead in Lagunitas Creek below the dams would be protected. This works continues today, but the future of these salmon runs under drought-conditions remains unclear.
  • At least 26% of the water we use in Marin County is diverted from the Russian and Eel Rivers, endangering already devastated salmon runs in these watersheds.
  • 50% of water we use in Marin County during the hot, dry summer months is used for irrigation purposes. Designing our homes and backyards to better suit our local climate would have a HUGE positive impact on conservation.
