SPAWN Presents

Fire Ecology in Marin County

-A talk by Urban Forester and Fire Ecologist, Ray Moritz

Fire has been a part of natural world since the beginning. Today, with so many homes built in forests that historically experienced fire, a serious problem has developed-- How do we balance the natural role of fire with the need to protect lives and property? Come find out about one of the most interesting components of the environment, fire ecology, through SPAWN's Tree Ecology Seminar Series #3

  • What is the historical role of fire in the San Geronimo Valley
  • How Native Americans used fire
  • The affect of the Anglo invasion on fire occurrences
  • Where we are today

Ray Moritz has been a consultant in Urban Forestry and Fire Ecology in California since 1977, starting his own business in 1989. He was a firefighter in Marin County for 14 years. In 1992 he was one of the founders of FireSafe MARIN, Inc., the first nonprofit private/public partnership fire safe council in California. Ray was appointed to the California State Assembly Natural Resources Committee Science Panel on "The California Fire Problem". He is currently on the Executive Committee of the California Oak Mortality Task force (COMFT). Ray was a vegetation management consultant to the Mount Tamalpais Area Vegetation Management Plan.

Third Presentation of SPAWN’S Tree Ecology Seminar Series.

Join SPAWN in a fascinating journey into the ecosystems of the watersheds of Marin County and beyond. Hear distinguished speakers and join interesting discussions on trees, salmon, steelhead, Sudden Oak Death and fire and how these parts of the forest system interact. We will learn how we can protect and safeguard the forests of West Marin County. Seminars will be held monthly or bi-monthly at the San Geronimo Valley Cultural Center or the Fairfax Library.
