Another
Work party at
Roy' Pools on the San Geronimo Golf Course
Sunday
June 1, 2003 from 9:30 am to 1pm.Participate!
To create more natural conditions
at the site, we will be clearing the site of non-native blackberries
and scotch broom in preparation for re-vegetation with native shade
cover species. We will also be installing irrigation for the site.
Background:
The large restoration project at this
site was completed in October 1999 to allow salmonids to easily
migrate upstream to spawning grounds. Thanks to the dedication of
several agencies, organizations and community members this collaborative
effort was a success. Yet there is still work to be done to improve
this site and allow for juvenile salmon to survive. We discovered
that each summer juveniles become stranded in the pools. Then direct
sun shines down on the site all summer causing water temperatures
to reach dangerous levels. Subsequently massive, non-natural blooms
of algae inundate the pools. Each summer we rescue the stranded
juveniles, removed the algae and place branches in the pool to create
shade cover. We are currently developing a plan to repair the structures
to allow safe passage for juveniles through the site year round.
