2006 Coho Confab, Aug 25-27When: August 25th, 26th, and 27th Where: Clem Miller Environmental Education Center, Point Reyes National Seashore Call SPAWN at 415-488-0370 x102 for workshop and registration details. The Salmonid Restoration Federation (SRF), Trees Foundation, Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN), Tomales Bay Association (TBA), NOAA Restoration Center and CA Department of Fish and Game will sponsor the 9th annual Coho Confab August 25-27th in the beautiful Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County. The Confab is a hands-on symposium focused on exploring the restoration of our local watersheds and the techniques used to enhance the recovery of critically endangered salmon and steelhead. The Confab brings together community members, landowners, activists, scientists, students, and restoration ecologists for a weekend of innovative skills-building workshops. Many workshops will take place in the Lagunitas Creek Watershed, home to the largest remaining run of wild coho in Central CA. A Friday night orientation will highlight local perspectives on salmon restoration in Marin County, including an opening prayer and special presentation by the Miwok and Southern Pomo Tribal Council. On Saturday evening TBA will host a salmon banquet where we will all be treated to music and stories with Dana Lyons. Workshops include: ∑ Maureen Roche (Mattole River ecologist) and Eric Ettlinger (MMWD ecologist) - "Tales from a Hidden World," snorkelling local creeks to identify juvenile coho salmon and steelhead. ∑ Tour of SPAWN's community-based projects in the San Geronimo Valley including their new rain-harvesting design and a bonus raingarden project at the Lagunitas School, new bioengineered bank stabilization site and riparian reforestation, native plant nursery, and new land trust purchase. ∑ Coho Across the Riverscape: A Perspective on Restoration with Matt Sloat, Stillwater Sciences ecologist. ∑ Jim Harrington, aquatic bioassessment pioneer, will lead a field session focused on how macro-invertebrate sampling can be used as a tool for assessing the health of local creeks. ∑ Native plant collection and propagation with Circuit Riders Productions Inc. ∑ Brannon Ketchum (hydrologist) and Lorraine Parson (wetland ecologist) with the Point Reyes National Seashore will lead a tour of the new Giacomini Wetlands restoration project where participants will learn about large-scale wetland restorations and participate in invasive species removal. ∑ Jim Locke, a local geology professor from Marin College will discuss the response of salmon populations to geology. ∑ Riparian songbirds response to restoration with Melissa Pitkin from PRBO Conservation Science. ∑ David Lewis (UC Cooperative Extension) and Nancy Scolari (Marin RCD) will lead a Tomales Bay Watershed Management workshop and sustainable farm tour that addresses water quality priorities and restoration techniques. ∑ Fish barrier removal techniques and resources with Jon Mann (Prunuske Chatham), Leah Mahan (NOAA), Michael Bowen (Coastal Conservancy), and Martina Koller (PSFMC) ∑ Art of the Environment: Power Compositions with Steve Waldrom, SPAWN naturalist. Cost (sliding scale): $100- $125.00 for early registration. Cost include lodging, meals, and workshops.
