Aug 22 - Creek Clean Up !Contact: Chris Pincetich, SPAWN Watershed Biologist chris@tirn.net, (415) 663-8590 x102 WHAT: Creek Cleanup in the Lagunitas Watershed - Woodacre to Inverness WHEN: August 22, 9 am to 1 pm, 2009. WHERE: Meet at the Lagunitas School parking lot in front of the new Gym, 6350 Sir Francis Drake Blvd. Cleanup sites focus along the entire length of Lagunitas Creek, from Woodacre to Inverness. Another West Marin meeting spot is being finalized RSVP for details! WHO: You, family and friends! This Cleanup event is sponsored by the Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) and the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC) and is supported by many local environmental groups. WEAR/ BRING: Old shoes or boots that can get wet, study clothes for working near blackberry bushes, sunscreen and a hat. BACKGROUND: Trash and debris in the San Geronimo and Lagunitas Creeks have collected all year from roads and litterbugs and YOU can lend a hand to CLEANUP the creeks for our endangered coho salmon! Join us, receive supplies and instructions, then hike or bike to several sites along San Geronimo and Lagunitas Creek for the cleanup. SPAWN and EAC workers will be in the parking lot all morning directing folks to creek access spots and collecting the full trash bags. Become a watershed steward by joining the Creek Cleanup! Trash and debris contain contaminants, degrade habitat quality, and can disrupt natural food webs. The effects of trash impact our local creeks and wildlife and can wash downstream to have global effects in the ocean ecosystem, where plastic trash is accumulating at devastating levels. Think globally and act locally to improve habitat for all wildlife and ourselves! Endangered coho salmon spawn throughout the San Geronimo and Lagunitas Creek Watersheds. These Watersheds, located in West Marin County are reported to have the largest population of wild coho left in Central California. SPAWN and EAC work in collaboration to protect the critical, sensitive habitat of Marin's watersheds through habitat restoration, conservation research and monitoring, environmental advocacy and public education to improve watershed health for the coho salmon and all wildlife, including ourselves.
